The Quiet ManThe Quiet Man stars John Wayne, Maureen O’Hara, Leonard Maltin, Michael Wayne and Toni Wayne. It was directed by John Ford who won an Oscar for directing this movie.

The storyline is about an American boxer named Sean Thornton, who is played by John Wayne. He is haunted by something that happened in the ring, so he decides he wants a more peaceful life and returns to Ireland. When he get there he meets a young woman who he falls in love with. She is played by Maureen O’Hara. They get so involved that they want to get married but she won’t do it unless she gets the approval of her brother. Her brother, played by Victor McLaglen, doesn’t approve of their romance and won’t agree to the marriage. Continue Reading

Trouble in ParadiseTrouble in Paradise is one of directors Ernst Lubitsch’s best movies. It has superb comic timing and a grace and sophistication that made him famous throughout his movies back in the day. He was a real master at all the latest film techniques and brought something new to each movie he directed.

The movie itself is all about a couple of thieves who try to scam a rich executive of a perfume company. Herbert Marshall stars as the main thief who meets a pick pocket played by Miriam Hopkins and they fall in love. They then try and scam a perfume executive played by Kay Francis but Herbert gets romantically involved with her too. So the whole scam is then jeopardized as he must choose between his lover or this new woman in his life. Continue Reading

Sabrina – The Centennial Collection – 1954

SabrinaSabrina is a classic tale of romance and love, featuring Audrey Hepburn and Humphrey Bogart. It was released in 1954 and has since been remade in 1995 with Harrison Ford as the role played by Bogart. Although looking at most reviews, it does not compare with this classic version.

The movie features a girl called Sabrina, played by Audrey Hepburn, who is the daughter of a chauffeur. She falls madly in love with the son of the household that her father works for. He is a rich playboy and doesn’t notice her admiration for him. She gets sent away to Paris where she enrols in a cooking school. But whilst she is there she meets a baron who teaches her how to be more sophisticated and turns her into a cultural woman. Continue Reading

They are Casablanca, Gigi, An American in Paris and Mrs. Miniver and all of them won the Best Picture award. This is a 2 disc, doubled sided DVD collection which gives higher picture quality and sound than the originals.

The movies themselves are real classics from the 1940’s and 1950’s. The first one is Casablanca which many people consider to be the best movie ever made. It stars Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman and is based just before World War II. The next movie is Mrs. Miniver and is also based during the war. South Pacific - Collector's Edition 1958The South Pacific movie was based on the stories in the book Tales From the South Pacific which was written by James Michener. This special collector’s edition gives you the remastered movie and lots more to go with it.

Although there are many sceptics that don’t rate the movie as the acting wasn’t the best, there is no doubting that some of the most famous songs came out of it like “I’m Gonna Wash That Man Right Outta My Hair”, “This Nearly Was Mine”, “Some Enchanted Evening” and “Younger Than Springtime”. A Streetcar Named Desire Two-Disc Special EditionA Streetcar Named Desire really shot Marlon Brando into the public eye as his performance was so electrifying. Created in 1951 it tells the story of Stanley Kowalski (played by Brando) and his wife Stella (played by Kim Hunter) and the arrival of Stella’s sister Blanche DuBois (played by Vivien Leigh).

This causes a lot of tension between the three of them and many battles of wills are played out. There were even quite a few scenes that had to be cut out of the movie as they were deemed not suitable. But in a later editors cut, they were put back in so people could see what they missed.
