It is clear to see why they called this movie Giant because everything about it is big. It took 3 years to make it and it is more than 200 minutes long. It also has cast of big names including Rock Hudson and Elizabeth Taylor. It was eventually released in 1956 and the director, George Stevens, won the Academy Award for his excellent work in the movie.
The movie is about a huge ranching dynasty owned by the Benedict family. Currently it is Bick Benedict, played by Rock Hudson, who is running everything. His wife Leslie, played by Elizabeth Taylor, has come from Maryland and is finding it difficult to adapt. The have many arguments that become comic focal points in the movie that you will remember over again.
Problems arise when ranch hand Jett Rink, played by James Dean, falls in love with Leslie and he makes it his goal to impress her. So he inherits some land and to everyone’s amazement begins to drill for oil on it. Astonishingly he actually strikes an oil well and this begins his search for more oil. It creates a power struggle in the family as he becomes wealthier and builds more oil wells.
The acting in the movie is simply stunning and James Dean really steals the show with his portrayal of Jett. Elizabeth Taylor was only 23 when the movie was made but showed glimpses that she was to become a huge star.
