Holiday Inn was released in 1942 and starred Fred Astaire and Bing Crosby. It was a black and white musical that showed off their talents perfectly.
They play rival song and dance men who both compete with each other for the affections of their performing partner, played by Virginia Dale. Fred Astaire eventually wins her affections and this forces Crosby to move to Connecticut. When he gets there he decides to create a new resort that puts on shows during the holidays.
Fred Astaire eventually splits up with Virginia Dale and he travels to Connecticut and arrives very drunk one evening. He dances with a woman who helped create the shows but the next day cannot remember what she looked like. So he searches for her every time the show is on and Crosby does his best to prevent him from finding her.
There are some great songs in the movie including “Washington’s Birthday”, “Easter Parade” and the first appearance of “White Christmas” which would later become a huge movie starring Crosby. There is a great routine with both Astaire and Crosby dancing to “I’ll Capture Her Heart” and it really shows off their skills as talented performers.
This is a special edition set and comes with some great bonus features. There is a 45 minute feature with Fred Astaire’s daughter and Ken Barnes where they look through letters and reminisce about her father and his life. Ken also stars in another 7 minute bonus where he shares scenes and techniques of just how the music sequences were filmed at the time. There is also the original theatrical trailer for the movie included.
All in all, this is a great special edition movie DVD that features 2 of the best performers ever to appear on the big screen.
