Vertigo was directed by Alfred Hitchcock and released in 1958. But surprisingly it wasn’t a hit at the time and it was only years after that people realised just how good it was. Thus the reason why it is today considered a real classic by one of the best directors ever to step foot on the planet.
In fact, his direction in this movie is the reason why it is considered one of the best movies ever made by several polls. Of course it needed good acting too and that was more than shown by James Stewart, Kim Noval, Barbara Bel Geddes, Tom Helmore and Henry Jones. They all played a key role in the movies success.
The movie stars James Stewart who plays a retired police detective. An old friend hires him to follow his wife, played by Kim Novak, who he bizarrely suspects her of being possessed by a dead woman. But when he starts following her, he realises he is in love with her. He saves her from drowning and then becomes obsessed with another woman. It has the usual twists and turns of a typical Hitchcock movie.
The first disc in this collection has the main movie which has been excellently transferred over to DVD. It also has feature commentary from William Friedkin and associate producers. There are also the original trailers for the movie and the production notes.
The second disc has all the remaining bonus features including Hitchcock’s collaborators. Interview excerpts and “The Case of Mr. Pelham”.
The movie itself is brilliant with its twists and turns but to have the bonus features too makes this collector’s edition a real must have. If you like Alfred Hitchcock films, then you’ll love this one.
